First off, Happy Black History Month! I wanted to start off this month by sharing a collaborative photoshoot with the Peculiar Collective on MLK day.
The District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia—collectively known as the DMV—boast a vibrant and dynamic arts scene. For artists and photographers, this region offers a plethora of opportunities to engage in creative collaborations that not only enhance individual portfolios but also strengthen the community's cultural fabric. One notable organization fostering such collaboration is the Peculiar Collective, which has become a cornerstone for creatives in the area.
The Peculiar Collective: A Hub for Creative Minds
Established in 2019, the Peculiar Collective began with educational missions in Ghana, assisting HOPE Missions in building schools and wells across the country. Transitioning to domestic initiatives, they launched their first workshop in Maryland, connecting local networks to promote unity and transparency among creatives. Today, the collective has grown into a global family of over 2,300 members, including photographers, videographers, and graphic designers, all collaborating to enhance their skills and businesses.
I had the pleasure of participating in a co-working and photo walk event in Annapolis, MD at Lightbox Studios this past MLK Day. It was a fun opportunity to connect with other creatives, such as models, photographers, and makeup artists. And as a bonus, I captured some beautiful images!
The Peculiar Collective's mission is to provide a welcoming space for all creatives, regardless of background, to share their journeys and collaborate on ideas. They host annual conferences, with the upcoming event scheduled for November 7-8, 2025, aiming to inspire and educate over 300 attendees through workshops, photo walks, and lectures.
As a side note, getting fit enough to rock this outfit = life goal! I'm so happy to have found this group. I will definitely attend more of their event!
Photographers! Should you choose to attend a photowalk - pro tip - bring a godox trigger. It will allow you to use the strobe lighting. There isn't enough space for everyone to set up lights, so sharing is key.
Educational Resources and Workshops
For those looking to enhance their skills, the Peculiar Collective offers the Peculiar Academy, a convenient and affordable resource providing on-demand recordings and training on cutting-edge technologies and tools designed to elevate photography, SEO strategies, and website development. This platform allows creatives to learn at their own pace and take their businesses to the next level.
The DMV area is rich with opportunities for artists, photographers, and videographers to engage in creative collaborations. Organizations like the Peculiar Collective, along with various networking groups, residencies, and educational resources, provide platforms for creatives to connect, learn, and grow together, strengthening the region's vibrant arts community.
Keep creating!
